Can you imagine being wiped out financially and then losing all of your children in a tragic accident?  It’s hard to fathom, isn’t it?  I’d venture to say that it’s even harder to imagine facing such circumstances with peace and a sense that “all is well with your soul.” Yet that’s exactly what happened for Horatio Spafford who penned the words to the beautiful hymn, It is Well with My Soul in 1873.

After losing his sizable fortune in the Chicago Fire of 1871, he lost all four of his daughters in a shipwreck in the Atlantic. Only his wife survived, sending word to him in America, “Saved alone.”  As Spafford traversed the ocean himself to join his wife, it is said that he was inspired to write these words near the very spot where his daughters perished:                                                                                                          Read More..
